Meta announced it will begin tracking employee keystrokes and mouse clicks to train its artificial intelligence models, a move described by some workers as "very dystopian". The new tool, called Model Capability Initiative, runs on Meta computers and internal apps, logging employee activity to be used as training data for AI. A Meta spokesman said the data would help build "agents to help people complete everyday tasks using computers", adding that "safeguards are in place to protect sensitive content". The company plans to spend roughly $140bn on AI in 2026, almost double last year's investment, and has already laid off around 2,000 employees this year. Meta's job listings have dropped from about 800 in March to just seven currently. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said 2026 would be "the year that AI dramatically changes the way we work".
